Receiving From God

“Go away from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. It shall be that you will drink of the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to provide for you there.”(1 Kings 17:3-4,)

God loves us and provides for us.  David rejoiced that the Righteous never beg for bread.  God provides the food and clothing and basic needs of His children.

There are two factors to learn from this verse when we consider God providing for our own needs.  First, He provides when we go where He commands.  Elijah was commanded to go to the brook Cherith, which was outside the Promised Land and a good distance from where he was.  God was providing both a hiding place and a place of sustenance and refreshment, but Elijah had to be obedient and make the trip.  I wonder how many times I have missed out on God’s provision because I did not want to get out of my comfort zone.

Second, God provided, but He did not provide filet mignon!  God chose instead to provide a little road-kill brought in by scavenging vultures!  Not exactly appetizing, but when you are hungry, anything will do.  We have become spoiled in this age of plenty.  We no longer pray for “our daily bread” because what we really want is a feast.  We have learned to be content with much, let’s make sure we can be content with little.

In His Grace,
