When God Shows Up!
“It happened that when the priests came from the holy place, the cloud filled the house of the Lord, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord.” (1 Kings 8:10-11)
At the end of the construction of Solomon’s temple, as the Ark of the Covenant was placed into the Holy of Holies, the visible glory of God filled the temple to such an extent that the priests could not remain standing. The visible appearance of God’s glory is called His “Shekinah” glory.
Today, God’s appearance is through the Holy Spirit, not through His Shekinah glory. Those who look for physically visible appearances of God will be disappointed. He first appeared in Shekinah glory, then in the glory of His Son, who was the exact representation of God, then through His Spirit.
Why did God choose to dwell in the Old Testament temple? Perhaps, in part, it had to do with the tremendous amount of care and preparation the people made to prepare a place for the worship of God. Our text is the completion of two chapters of detail about the work that went into making the temple a beautiful and holy place.
In our day, do we make too many short-cuts? Do we attempt to save time and money, and short change ourselves when it comes to experiencing God’s glory?
