God, Can You Really Work This Out for Good? | 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

2 Corinthians 4:16-18
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

One of life’s biggest dangers is the trap of the temporal. That sucking sound you hear is the great mass of temptations calling for our attention from the time our feet hit the floor in the morning until our head hits the pillow at night. We are showered with “feel better now,” “be entertained now,” “buy this now,” “you need this now,” messages that seem so real and yet are so very hopeless. When we are caught in the trap of the temporal we will most certainly “lose heart.”

But followers of Christ are called to a bigger vision. We don’t fix our eyes on the temporary. We are called to an “eternal glory” that far outweighs temporal pleasures or pain. The focus and hope of the eternity allows us to be “renewed day by day.”

So we keep our focus on eternal things even when we can’t see them. In the crisp clean air of mountaintop experiences when our heart is filled with joy and we are tempted to think that this is as good as it gets; we keep our focus on the eternal when and where it really can’t get any better. And in the dark heavy air of the valleys when our hearts are filled with despair and we are tempted to think that if there is a God then He has forgotten us; we keep our focus on the eternal when and where every tear will be wiped away.

Father, you have created man with eternity planted in his heart. We long for something beyond ourselves and beyond our time. Keep our eyes fixed on our eternal futures so that we don’t lose heart in our temporal presents.
