The Real Thing | Colossians 2:16-19

Colossians 2:16-19 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you for the prize. Such a person goes into great detail about what he has seen, and his unspiritual mind puffs him up with idle notions. He has lost connection with the Head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.

It was the game of all games. Forget all the video stuff out today. This game would still be beating them all in sales; if they had not stopped making it. The game was…drum roll…Electric Football!

I played it for hours. Granted, I never got the passing game or kicking game down; but my running attacked rocked. I would set up the formations; turn on the switch attached to the electrical cord and they were off—stumbling, bumbling, rumbling—all over the field. And then my ball carrier broke free—he…may…go…all…the…way!!! I did my own little end zone dance right there in the dining room.

There was only one thing I liked better than Electric Football…real football with real people. Playing a neighborhood game of tackle; then later, putting on the pads in pee wee football; and then under the lights on Friday nights. Nothing beats the real thing.

Some of the church goers at the First Church of Colossae were just playing games. They were playing with plastic spiritual celebrations void of real meaning. They were celebrating certain days as special …and making others join in the celebration. Some were worshiping created things. The pretend worshippers were walking around with big heads and puffed out chests. Pride always goes along with pretense.

Any spiritual game players reading this? Hung up on the rules and regulations of religion? More concerned with how much you know than what you apply? Worshiping stuff? Plastic religion is one dirty dead end street.

Only Jesus is the real thing. Only Jesus meets the void you are searching to fill. So put away the plastic religion and enter into a real life-changing relationship with Jesus.

Following Jesus is not about playing games. It’s about being in The Game.
