What’s your highest calling as a parent?

April 18, 2012

“For this child I prayed, and the LORD has granted me my petition that I made to him. Therefore I have lent him to the LORD. As long as he lives, he is lent to the LORD.”

1 Samuel 1:27-28

As a pastor, one of my greatest joys is when the new parents in our church bring in their babies and small children and dedicate them to the service of Jesus Christ. I just love the idea of committing to raise your children in a Christian home where the Lord is loved and encouraging them to follow Christ.

Even in the Old Testament, Hannah brought her young baby boy, Samuel, to the temple to be dedicated to the Lord’s service. What a bold declaration of faith to essentially say, “This child is not mine, he’s God’s.”

It’s my prayer that every Christian parent would understand their responsibility to bring their children up in the nurture and the admonition of the Lord… that they would do everything within their power to teach their children the Word of God and grow them up in the faith so that they could send them out into the world as witnesses for Jesus Christ.

That’s the purpose of parenting. Not findinf fulfillment as a husband or wife or as a mother or father. But passing the baton of witness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and give the world another generation of faithful disciple-makers!

CONSIDER IT YOUR HIGHEST CALLING AS A PARENT TO DEDICATE YOUR CHILDREN TO GOD’S PURPOSES AND SEND THEM OUT AS BOLD DISCIPLES!
