Heart Perspective

Today's reading: 1 Samuel 16:1-13

As Samuel journeys to Bethlehem to seek out and anoint the next king, he is expecting God to direct him to an impressive man--one who is physically fit, muscular, tall and good looking. But God surprises Samuel when He rejects Jesse's oldest son who appears to fit that "impressive" list. I never get tired of reading God's words to Samuel when Samuel assumes that Eliab is God's choice for the next king.

"But the LORD said to Samuel, 'Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart'" (1 Samuel 16:7).

It's so easy for us to get caught up in outward appearances. I know I certainly do. So I was thankful for this reminder that God is looking at our hearts, and it is His desire for us to love, follow and serve Him fully.
