Paul's focus throughout 1 Timothy 3 is the church and specifically church leaders. Even so, those of us who aren't church leaders can also look to this passage for guidance regarding godly living. As I read, I could see many characteristics to consider and put into practice. The main point that stood out to me was the need to be self-controlled. This quality seemed to be a prerequisite for accomplishing some of the others qualities Paul talked about like--being hospitable, not being quarrelsome and being gentle.
