"Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near."
When Jesus rode into Jerusalem He was described as thus, "gentle and mounted on a donkey". In His sermon on the mount Jesus teaches His disciples saying, "Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth". (Matthew 5:5)God’s nearness is marked by a gentle spirit not by a powerful or abrasive one. Although Jesus, when He rode into Jerusalem just before His crucifixion, was the King of Glory, God clothed in human flesh, He came not in strength and boldness but in all gentleness. See this with me beloved, this was God coming near to die for our sins and yet He was gentle, meek and mild. Meekness is not the absence of authority or the lack of strength but rather it is strength under control, and authority not acted upon.
We should never be in fear of those who belong to God, of those who are God’s chosen instruments to reach His world. When fear is created it is not of God beloved. Godliness is first and foremost gentle and second nonjudgmental. Perfect love cast out fear beloved it never imparts it. (I John 4:18) Jesus did not regard equality with God as a thing to be grasped but rather He emptied Himself, taking on the form of a bondservant. (Philippians 2:6-7) Gentleness is found when we reach the bottom of ourselves, when there is nothing left of us. You cannot be full of self and be gentle for it is the fruit of self-less-ness. When and if we want more of God in us we must let go of more of us. We must make room for Him until He has every bit of space in our earthly tabernacle. This is when our gentle forbearing spirit let’s all know that the Lord is near.
Do you have an abrasive personality beloved? Do you deal harshly or speak abruptly to others? Have you seen yourself through the eyes of others? When and if you do, I pray that you will see God and not yourself. We must recognize that gentleness will be present when the Lord draws near. God’s steps are strong but He never leaves His footprints all over a life.
The steps of the gentle lead to greatness.
