The Word that Stands Forever
A voice says, “Cry!” And I said, “What shall I cry?” All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the LORD blows on it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. —Isaiah 40:6-8
This passage in Isaiah 40 is prophetic of the ministry of John the Baptist. But the picture being created is of God coming to His people. Verse 3 says, “A voice cries, ‘In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.’” God wants all obstacles removed. God wants to come into your life and bring comfort to you. He wants every single obstacle out of the way.
Look at verse 8, “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” My confidence communicating the awesomeness of God has absolutely nothing to do with my capacity to put things into words. The very message I bring to you is the message from God's Word, which stands forever. It is God speaking about Himself. It is God telling us how He wants to be known and understood as awesome.
You need three things if you want to grow and flourish in your faith—if you want God to be all for you that He can be. First, you need to know about the cross and resurrection of Christ, and what that’s all about. If you don’t, find out today. Second, you need to have the authority of God’s Word in your life. Third, you need to know about the greatness of God. If you have a tiny, little on-the-mantelpiece God, He is not going to help you make it through the things life brings your way.
God is awesome! His Word stands forever. His comfort and strength are all we need. In today’s text, see it for yourself. Surely His own Spirit can take that word and cause His greatness to be lifted up before our eyes.
- Would you say you are growing and flourishing in your faith?
- Why or why not?
Lord, You are great! There is no one like You. The more time I spend exposed to Your Word, the more I realize what a gift You have given to us. Let me, like the psalmist, hide Your Word in my heart, so I won’t sin against You. Grip my life with Your greatness and receive glory through the little that I am, placed in Your hands. Thank You for the privilege of knowing you now and for all eternity. In Jesus’ name, amen.
