Catch God’s Eye?
1Thus says the LORD: “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool; what is the house that you would build for me, and what is the place of my rest? 2All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the LORD. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word. —Isaiah 66:1-2
Humility. We know we are supposed to be humble because God is opposed to the proud but gives grace to the humble. We know we want God’s grace and we know we need it, but have you ever asked yourself, Why is God so concerned with our humility?
There are many reasons, but Isaiah gives us a clue about one big reason in the verses above. We are to be humble because we should never forget exactly who God is. God has everything. Why? Because He made everything. He made the earth, heavens, and universe. He made all of the people. He formed the nations. He made everything! Pause and think about that for a moment. What does this do to our view of how powerful we are?
Yet, this same awesome God cares about what we do and who we are becoming. Humility is our recognition of who He is in comparison to who we are. It’s the right perspective of Him in relation to us. And it’s important to have the right perspective. It is so easy to grow conceited. I remember doing really well in swim practice when I was in college. I thought I was ready for the upcoming meet and would come in first place. That was until I hit the water! As I gulped down the wake of the other swimmers, I finished in last place. I was humbled. I had the wrong view of myself because of who I was comparing myself to. We are like that with God.
When we are proud, we misjudge our abilities and forget about God’s abilities. God doesn’t want us to do that because it is harmful to us and it actually puts the focus where it doesn’t belong; on us. We steal God’s glory when we inflate ourselves with pride. That is very serious. And we forget how dependent on Him He created us to be.
God loves humility in us because it is good for us and it brings glory to Him. Want to catch God’s eye? Want to incur His stare?Be humble, contrite, and tremble at His Word. View God in the right perspective.—Hayden Norris
● What are some areas in my life where I may have the wrong perspective of myself?
● Who can I ask who would tell me honestly if I have an inflated view of myself?
Father, I am a thief of Your glory far too often. I take credit for things You have done and forget Your gracious work in me and around me. Forgive me for robbing You of what belongs to You alone. Help me to catch Your eye by humbling myself before You each and every day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
