I AM ... The Good Shepherd | John 10:28
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.
I grew up believing that I could lose my salvation. I believed that I could be a child of God in the morning, and be out of his family in the afternoon. I imagined a hole worn in heaven’s register where my name had been written and erased time after time.
It was in a seminary class that I first understood the truth of today’s passage. After the class, standing in a parking lot on a hot Dallas afternoon, the truth moved from my head to my heart. I had accepted Jesus as my Savior. That day I accepted his unconditional perfect love.
God’s unconditional love means that there is nothing I can do to make him love me more; there is nothing I can do to make him love me less. That truth does not give me a license to sin; rather, it gives me the freedom to follow hard after the One who gave himself for me on the cross. Have you come to grips with God’s unconditional love?
Lord Jesus, thank you for the gift of eternal life. And thank you for your perfect unconditional love. Help me to respond to you today with wholehearted obedience. In your name. Amen.
