A Lightning Bolt
We were in a training session getting prepared to counsel at Word of Life Island. There were a couple hundred staff members sitting on the benches in front of me trying to stay awake as the late afternoon training dragged on. Suddenly, a clap of thunder, then a lightning bolt just a few feet over the heads of the counselors. The deafening rumble and blinding light shattered the window behind me, glass sprayed everywhere, and I jumped several feet forward. The bolt hit a large Adirondack pine just outside the eastern windows, exploding the wood, and setting the tree on fire. One thing was clear, the lightning bolt had our attention and no one wondered whether they saw the light.
As Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives only days before He was arrested, He told His disciples that unlike His quiet first coming to Bethlehem, His second landing on earth would be an unmistakable showstopper.
“For like a lightning bolt that strikes from east to west—that’s the way the coming of the Son of Man will be.” - Matthew 24:27
The certainty and clarity of this climactic entrance by the true Messiah protects us from the flickers of false messiahs down through history who invite us to trust their promises of peace and prosperity if only we will join their cause. When Jesus comes to set up His Kingdom, we won’t have to respond to some special invitation gathering out in the desert or to some secret meeting in an inner room.
“At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory.” - Matthew 24:30
LORD, thank you that You gave us the truth that inoculates us against the lies of false redeemers and saviors. Protect me from buying into the promises made by gifted geeks in Silicon Valley or the skilled oratory of political leaders who promise they have the right governmental plan that can guarantee us peace and prosperity in our time. Quietly speak through Your Spirit during this age of grace to hearts and move them to believe and receive You as a gift before they face your unmistakable omnipotence.
