Celebrate Our Master’s Voice

Psalm 119:113-120

Mike, my traveling companion, woke up at 3:30.  (It’s what happens when you’re adjusting to a fourteen hour time difference and because of the dateline you’re a day ahead.) He decided to call Dora, his wife, because it was only 1:30 in the afternoon back in Texas. “Hi, thought I would check in.” Dora responded with word about their army officer son who had arrived from Chicago and was off to a friend’s wedding in North Dallas. “He even put on his dress blues, lookin' sharp. Hey, let me put it on speaker phone and you can talk to Bullet.” Now Bullet is Mike and Dora’s bulldog, and even from 11, 359 kilometers he lit up when he heard his master’s voice.

The psalmist in Psalm 119 tells us repeatedly that he lights up with joy when he hears God’s voice (Psalm 119:14, 16, 20, 24, 35, 47, 48, 70, 92, 97, 103) and again in Psalm 119:11 he writes,

“My inheritance are Your testimonies forever; for they are the joy of my heart.”

The psalmist didn’t wake up at 3:30AM to talk to his wife, but he did wake up at midnight to praise his LORD (Psalm 119:62). I pray today that I can be as smart as Mike’s bulldog and respond with such exuberant joy just at the sound of my Master’s voice.

LORD, the last thing students need in Korea is a professor who only reaches their head. They need to catch the love, excitement, and authentic delight I have in Your inspired Word. Help me remember concrete times in my life experience when Your Word protected, guided, comforted, and delivered me. Move these students to fall in love with Your wisdom and truth in Ecclesiastes and the Psalms.

P.S. Mike just told me that Bullet may only be wagging his tail and giving that bulldog excited, shivering routine because he’s been conditioned and knows that Mike usually feeds him after the talk time. I could build on that and stress that my love for God’s instructions in His Word needs to be a lot more than an instinctual animal response, but that sells Bullet’s devotion to Mike short.
