Glimpses of Light

Matthew 17:5

I could see the wall cloud thundering toward us as Mary and I pointed her Toyota west on I20 and headed home from Tuscaloosa on Monday morning. Then gusts, light rain, pounding rain, and almost zero visibility through much of Mississippi and Louisiana. Eighteen-wheelers pelted us with spray, pressing through the storm, as we tried to pass. Nothing like driving for hours in daytime darkness. Nothing like living in stormy times when we can’t see ahead. Then as we drew near to the Texas border, we caught a glimpse of light.

As we’ve been tracking Matthew’s account of Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem in these daily devos, we’ve heard Him begin to prepare His disciples for the darkness that looms ahead, but beyond the wall cloud of Calvary, Jesus also gave them glimpses of  light. Right after He again challenged His disciples to take up their cross and follow Him, He made a strange prediction. “You can count on it! Some of you standing here will certainly not taste death until you see the Son of Man coming in His Kingdom.” (Matthew 16:28)

Then Matthew presents how six days later Peter, James, and John witnessed the radiating, blinding glory of Jesus as He was transfigured before them. Jesus gave them a glimpse of His future Kingdom, and His transfiguration concluded with the voice of His Father saying, “This is my Son, my much loved Son, in whom I delight!  Listen to Him.” (Matthew 17:5)

On Sunday night after our son-in-law had finished his first day as the pastor of Flatwoods Baptist in Northport, AL, his dad and mom came over to say good-bye before we left early the next morning.  Mary suggested we have a short time of prayer thanking the Lord Jesus for using Harvey and Jenae on their first Sunday, but before we bowed our heads, Harvey’s dad looked over at his oldest and said, “Son, I love you. I’m so proud of you. What a special day!”

Unlike Peter, James, and John, I’ve never seen the Lord Jesus radiate like the sun, but He has given me special moments of “Kingdom Grace.” Harvey’s dad’s blessing was one of those moments.
