A Cure For Quakes

Matthew 28:1-7

In North Texas earthquakes weren’t even on our radar until the ground south of us in Midlothian and north in Irving started having the tremors. Matthew records that Jesus predicted before He died that earthquakes would intensify as birth pangs indicating we are moving toward the end of this age. He also promised that He would return to set up His Kingdom (Matthew 24:7). But these end time earthquakes were foreshadowed early Sunday morning after Jesus was crucified on Friday. Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James and Joseph went early to the tomb to mourn Jesus. Instead, they got caught in an earthquake.

“Look! There was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven. He approached the stone, rolled it away, and then sat on top of it. His appearance was like lightning and his clothing was white as snow. Those guarding (the tomb) trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, ‘Don’t be afraid! I know that you are seeing Jesus, the crucified one. He is not here. He has risen exactly as He said. Come! Look at the place where He was lying.’” - Matthew 28:2-7

The soldiers guarding the dead man fainted and fell down like dead men. Jesus, the crucified dead man they were guarding, was not in the tomb. The women came to His tomb to mourn, but God’s angel told them they did not need to be afraid. He invited them to look inside where Jesus’ body had been placed. It wasn’t there anymore.

For the unbelieving soldiers the earthquake was a foreshadowing of the natural disasters that signal the judgment of God and the coming of His Son to deal with evil. For the women who followed Jesus, the earthquake was the big dramatic intro so that God’s heavenly messenger could give the women the core of the message they needed to tell first to Jesus’ disciples and then to the whole world. Jesus, the crucified Messiah, is not dead. He is alive. Trust this resurrected Savior and not even earthquakes can separate you from His love.
