Wisdom Before Wealth
by Berni Dymet
1 Kings 3:9 Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil; for who can govern this your great people.
Back when Solomon was a young bloke, he became king of Israel. God appeared to him one night and said, "Ask what I should give you."
Wow - God shows up and makes an offer like that. If God said that to me … I wonder what I would ask for? In fact, what would you ask for?
Solomon was young and he had a country to run, so he asked for wisdom.
Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil; for who can govern this your great people.
A pretty good ask when you think about it. Turns out that God liked it too. And because Solomon asked for wisdom ahead of wealth God said: I'll give you both. You'll have more wisdom than anyone else and more wealth too.
Wisdom before wealth - funny thing tends to happen when we set our priorities that way. So often the material blessings end up just tagging along behind.
My hunch is, it's a God thing.
