ELDERS

Read: 1 Timothy 3

Key Verse: “Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach.” - 1 Timothy 3:2

As the leaders go, so goes the people. God knows how important it is to have the right people leading the church! The bar is set high for someone to be an elder: no glaring weaknesses, says no to temptation consistently, above reproach, able to share his faith, loving in the home, generous, and a one-woman man are some qualities. Elders, also called overseers, have significant spiritual authority and tremendous responsibility.

Do not let someone be an elder just because they give a lot of money to the church, have a prestigious job, are older in years, or because they volunteer.

God’s emphasis in this passage is character and depth with the Lord that bears fruit. Having the right leaders can make the difference between a church struggling, being stagnant, or thriving. Choose leaders who truly fear God and have been tested in their faith. Go with God’s criteria as you select elders who walk in wisdom, love, and truth.
