Read: Ezra 1

Key Verse: “Anyone of His people among you-may His God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem in Judah and build the temple of the Lord, the God of Israel, the God who is in Jerusalem.” - Ezra 1:3

The Israelites had been in exile when God moved the heart of Cyrus, king of Persia. After Cyrus captured Babylon in 539, he gave permission for some of the Israelites to return to their homeland. Jeremiah predicted a 70 year captivity in Babylon, and the prophecy was exactly true. The decree by Cyrus was written in Hebrew, and the people rejoiced. A longing in their hearts had been fulfilled!

Consider these questions for reflection and application:

  1. What is a desire in your heart that has not yet been fulfilled?
  2. Have you ever felt like you were waiting in captivity?
  3. Are there new doors that god is opening for you now?
  4. Who are some of the people that God is raising up to help you?
  5. What new goals do you have in serving God?

Take time to ask God for courage and provision in your new opportunities.
