Do Not Quench the Spirit

by Berni Dymet

1 Th. 5:19-22 Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise the words of prophets, but test everything; hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil.

Some people claim that the only way that God speaks to us today is through His Word, the Bible.

While others claim that God's still speaking through prophecies, dreams, visions, words of knowledge and … in a whole bunch of ways that don't fit so well with our rational western mindset.

What's the answer? Well, the answer's in God's Word - absolute, infallible bedrock of my faith in Jesus. And in particular, the New Testament says that God is indeed still speaking in those and many other ways.

But isn't that open to abuse? Sure - which is why in 1st Thessalonians 5, verses 19 to 22 we read this:

Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise the words of prophets, but test everything; hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil.

I love the balance of God's Wisdom. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater - don't miss out on what He's doing, but at the same time, be discerning.
