“You shall not commit adultery.”

--Exodus 20:14

In the Old Testament, we are shown two men who responded very differently to sexual temptation. One was David, the other was Joseph. And you and I can learn a lot by comparing how each man dealt with this common form of temptation.

David’s problem was that he gave the devil a stick to hit him with! He set himself up for failure. While the rest of his generals were at war, David stayed home and let himself get bored.

And the minute he saw Bathsheba taking a bath from his balcony, he hesitated just long enough to give in to the temptation to sleep with her. And the trap he set for himself snapped shut before he knew what happened.

Joseph’s reaction, on the other hand, was 180 degrees different from David’s. When Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce Joseph, he didn’t stick around a single second to contemplate the situation.

His first reaction was to turn and run just as fast as he could! No hesitation, no contemplation. Joseph just fled the situation. Just like each of us should when sexual temptation rears its head!

I know a lot of people can probably relate to David a little bit more than they can to Joseph. If you are one of those people, I want to challenge you to be a Joseph. Don’t even hesitate for a moment when temptation comes lurking.

And if you have given in, then turn from your sin today. Remember, the blood of Jesus Christ can cover any sin. Sure, there are consequences to every action… and you may be suffering those consequences.

But the great news is that the blood Jesus shed on the cross can erase the shame and guilt of your sinful past.

So turn from your sin today, and let Christ renew you in your walk with Him!

WHEN TEMPTATION COMES LURKING, BE A “JOSEPH” AND FLEE THE SITUATION!
