Charles Hutchinson Gabriel was born in Wilton, Iowa. He settled in Chicago in 1892, where he edited collections of Christian music. He also wrote hymn tunes which speak of their own worth: "Oh, It Is Wonderful," "I Stand Amazed in the Presence of Jesus the Nazarene," and "Send the Light."
