Parenting Solo

Cal Thomas

Syndicated columnist
Listening to Paul Harvey the other day, I heard him say that more than half of all babies born in Great Britain are now born to women who are not married to the baby's father. More than half!

In America it's getting as bad. About 80 percent of black babies are born out of wedlock and the white birth rate is in the mid-30 percent range.

No society can sustain itself with numbers like this. At least, not a healthy society. Children cannot be microwaved. They need a mother and father and they need time, guidance, discipline, loving leadership, direction and attention. We have duped ourselves into thinking that none of this matters and that single parents can do just as good a job rearing children as married ones. The evidence and common sense say otherwise.

God designed the family for our benefit. But we are remaking God in our image and re-making the family to fit our own pleasures. It's so sad, especially for the children. I'm Cal Thomas in Washington.
