Jesus Denounces the Scribes and Pharisees

231 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples , 2 saying : " The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses ; 3 therefore all that they tell you, do and observe , but do not do according to their deeds ; for they say things and do not do them. 4 " They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men's shoulders , but they themselves are unwilling e to move them with so much as a finger .#rl 5 "But they do all their deeds to be noticed by men ; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments. 6 "They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues , 7 and respectful greetings in the market places , and being called Rabbi by men . 8 "But do not be called Rabbi ; for One is your Teacher , and you are all brothers . 9 "Do not call anyone on earth your father ; for One is your Father , He who is in heaven . 10 "Do not be called leaders ; for One is your Leader , that is, Christ . 11 " But the greatest among you shall be your servant . 12 " Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled ; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted .

13 " But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees , hypocrites , because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from people ; for you do not enter in yourselves , nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. 14 ["Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees , hypocrites , because you devour widows' houses , and for a pretense you make long prayers ; therefore e you will receive greater condemnation . 15 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees , hypocrites , because you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte ; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves . 16 "Woe to you, blind guides , who say , ' Whoever e swears by the temple , that is nothing ; but whoever e swears by the gold of the temple is obligated .' 17 "You fools and blind men ! Which is more important , the gold or the temple that sanctified the gold ? 18 "And, 'Whoever e swears by the altar , that is nothing , but whoever e swears by the offering on it, he is obligated .' 19 "You blind men , which is more important , the offering , or the altar that sanctifies the offering ?#rl 20 "Therefore , whoever swears by the altar , swears both by the altar and by everything on it. 21 "And whoever swears by the temple , swears both by the temple and by Him who dwells within it.#rl 22 "And whoever swears by heaven , swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it. 23 " Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees , hypocrites ! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin , and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law : justice and mercy and faithfulness ; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others . 24 "You blind guides , who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel ! 25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees , hypocrites ! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish , but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence . 26 "You blind Pharisee , first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish , so that the outside of it may become clean also . 27 " Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees , hypocrites ! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful , but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness . 28 "So you, too , outwardly appear righteous to men , but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness . 29 " Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees , hypocrites ! For you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous , 30 and say , 'If we had been living in the days of our fathers , we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets .' 31 "So you testify against yourselves , that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets . 32 "Fill up, then , the measure of the guilt of your fathers . 33 "You serpents , you brood of vipers , how will you escape the sentence of hell ?

34 " Therefore e , behold , I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes ; some of them you will kill and crucify , and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues , and persecute from city to city , 35 so that upon you may fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth , from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah , the son of Berechiah , whom you murdered between the temple and the altar . 36 "Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation .#rl

Jesus Laments over Jerusalem

37 " Jerusalem , Jerusalem , who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together , the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings , and you were unwilling e . 38 "Behold , your house is being left to you desolate ! 39 "For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say , ' BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE Lord !' "

Jesus' Authority Questioned

201 On one of the days while He was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel , the chief priests and the scribes with the elders confronted Him, 2 and they spoke , saying to Him, "Tell us by what authority You are doing these things , or who is the one who gave You this authority ?" 3 Jesus answered and said to them, "I will also ask you a question , and you tell Me: 4 "Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men ?" 5 They reasoned among themselves , saying , "If we say , 'From heaven ,' He will say , 'Why e did you not believe him?' 6 "But if we say , 'From men ,' all the people will stone us to death , for they are convinced that John was a prophet ." 7 So they answered that they did not know where it came from. 8 And Jesus said to them, "Nor will I tell you by what authority I do these things ."

The Parable of the Wicked Husbandmen

9 And He began to tell the people this parable : "A man planted a vineyard and rented it out to vine-growers , and went on a journey for a long time . 10 "At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers , so that they would give him some of the produce of the vineyard ; but the vine-growers beat him and sent him away empty-handed . 11 "And he proceeded to send another slave ; and they beat him also and treated him shamefully and sent him away empty-handed . 12 "And he proceeded to send a third ; and this one also they wounded and cast out. 13 "The owner of the vineyard said , 'What shall I do ? I will send my beloved son ; perhaps they will respect him.' 14 "But when the vine-growers saw him, they reasoned with one another , saying , 'This is the heir ; let us kill him so that the inheritance will be ours .' 15 "So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What , then , will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 "He will come and destroy these vine-growers and will give the vineyard to others ." When they heard it, they said , " May it never be!" 17 But Jesus looked at them and said , "What then is this that is written : ' THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED , THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone'? 18 " Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces ; but on whomever e it falls , it will scatter him like dust ."

Paying Taxes to Caesar

19 The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on Him that very hour , and they feared the people ; for they understood that He spoke this parable against them.

20 So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous , in order that they might catch Him in some statement , so that they could deliver Him to the rule and the authority of the governor . 21 They questioned Him, saying , "Teacher , we know that You speak and teach correctly , and You are not partial e to any, but teach the way of God in truth . 22 "Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar , or not?" 23 But He detected their trickery and said to them, 24 "Show Me a denarius . Whose likeness and inscription does it have ?" They said , "Caesar's ." 25 And He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's , and to God the things that are God's ." 26 And they were unable e to catch Him in a saying in the presence of the people ; and being amazed at His answer , they became silent .

The Question about the Resurrection

27 Now there came to Him some of the Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection ), 28 and they questioned Him, saying , "Teacher , Moses wrote for us that IF A MAN'S BROTHER DIES , having a wife , AND HE IS CHILDLESS , HIS BROTHER SHOULD MARRY THE WIFE AND RAISE UP CHILDREN TO HIS BROTHER . 29 "Now there were seven brothers ; and the first took a wife and died childless ; 30 and the second 31 and the third married her; and in the same way all seven died , leaving no children . 32 "Finally the woman died also . 33 "In the resurrection therefore , which one's wife will she be? For all seven had married her." 34 Jesus said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage , 35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead , neither marry nor are given in marriage ; 36 for they cannot e even die anymore , because they are like angels , and are sons of God , being sons of the resurrection . 37 "But that the dead are raised , even Moses showed , in the passage about the burning bush , where he calls the Lord THE GOD OF ABRAHAM , AND THE GOD OF ISAAC , AND THE GOD OF JACOB . 38 " Now He is not the God of the dead but of the living ; for all live to Him."

39 Some of the scribes answered and said , "Teacher , You have spoken well ." 40 For they did not have courage to question Him any longer about anything .

The Question about David's Son

41 Then He said to them, "How is it that they say the Christ is David's son ? 42 "For David himself says in the book of Psalms , ' THE Lord SAID TO MY Lord , "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND , 43  UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET ."' 44 "Therefore David calls Him 'Lord ,' and how is He his son ?"

Jesus Denounces the Scribes

45 And while all the people were listening , He said to the disciples , 46 "Beware of the scribes , who like to walk around in long robes , and love respectful greetings in the market places , and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets , 47 who devour widows' houses , and for appearance's sake offer long prayers . These will receive greater condemnation ."

The Widow's Offering

211 And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury . 2 And He saw a poor widow putting in two small copper coins . 3 And He said , "Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them; 4 for they all out of their surplus put into the offering ; but she out of her poverty put in all that she had to live on."

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs before the End

5 And while some were talking about the temple , that it was adorned with beautiful stones and votive gifts , He said , 6 "As for these things which you are looking at, the days will come in which there will not be left one stone upon another which will not be torn down ." 7 They questioned Him, saying , "Teacher , when therefore will these things happen ? And what will be the sign when these things are about to take place ?" 8 And He said , "See to it that you are not misled ; for many will come in My name , saying , ' I am He,' and, 'The time is near .' Do not go after them. 9 "When you hear of wars and disturbances , do not be terrified ; for these things must take place first , but the end does not follow immediately ." 10 Then He continued by saying to them, "Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom , 11 and there will be great earthquakes , and in various places plagues and famines ; and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven . 12 "But before all these things , they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, delivering you to the synagogues and prisons , bringing you before kings and governors for My name's sake . 13 " It will lead to an opportunity for your testimony . 14 " So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves; 15 for I will give you utterance and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute . 16 "But you will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends , and they will put some of you to death , 17 and you will be hated by all because of My name . 18 "Yet not a hair of your head will perish . 19 " By your endurance you will gain your lives .

20 "But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies , then recognize that her desolation is near . 21 "Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains , and those who are in the midst of the city must leave , and those who are in the country must not enter the city ; 22 because these are days of vengeance , so that all things which are written will be fulfilled . 23 "Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days ; for there will be great distress upon the land and wrath to this people ; 24 and they will fall by the edge of the sword , and will be led captive into all the nations ; and Jerusalem will be trampled under foot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled .

The Coming of the Son of Man

25 "There will be signs in sun and moon and stars , and on the earth dismay among nations , in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves , 26 men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world ; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken . 27 " Then they will see THE SON OF MAN COMING IN A CLOUD with power and great glory . 28 "But when these things begin to take place , straighten up and lift up your heads , because your redemption is drawing near ."

29 Then He told them a parable : "Behold the fig tree and all the trees ; 30 as soon e as they put forth leaves, you see it and know for yourselves that summer is now near . 31 "So you also , when you see these things happening , recognize that the kingdom of God is near . 32 "Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all things take place . 33 " Heaven and earth will pass away , but My words will not pass away . 34 " Be on guard , so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life , and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap ; 35 for it will come upon all those who dwell on the face of all the earth . 36 "But keep on the alert at all times , praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place , and to stand before the Son of Man ." 37 Now during the day He was teaching in the temple , but at evening He would go out and spend the night on the mount that is called Olivet . 38 And all the people would get up early in the morning to come to Him in the temple to listen to Him.
