Other Translations of Romans 13:14

New International Version

14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh. In contexts like this, the Greek word for "flesh" ("sarx" ) refers to the sinful state of human beings, often presented as a power in opposition to the Spirit.

English Standard Version

14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

The Message

14 Get out of bed and get dressed! Don't loiter and linger, waiting until the very last minute. Dress yourselves in Christ, and be up and about!

New King James Version

14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

New Living Translation

14 Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don't let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.

Matthew Henry's Commentary on Romans 13:14

Commentary on Romans 13:11-14

(Read Romans 13:11-14)

Four things are here taught, as a Christian's directory for his day's work. When to awake; Now; and to awake out of the sleep of carnal security, sloth, and negligence; out of the sleep of spiritual death, and out of the sleep of spiritual deadness. Considering the time; a busy time; a perilous time. Also the salvation nigh at hand. Let us mind our way, and mend our pace, we are nearer our journey's end. Also to make ourselves ready. The night is far spent, the day is at hand; therefore it is time to dress ourselves. Observe what we must put off; clothes worn in the night. Cast off the sinful works of darkness. Observe what we must put on; how we should dress our souls. Put on the armour of light. A Christian must reckon himself undressed, if unarmed. The graces of the Spirit are this armour, to secure the soul from Satan's temptations, and the assaults of this present evil world. Put on Christ; that includes all. Put on righteousness of Christ, for justification. Put on the Spirit and grace of Christ, for sanctification. The Lord Jesus Christ must be put on as Lord to rule you as Jesus to save you; and in both, as Christ anointed and appointed by the Father to this ruling, saving work. And how to walk. When we are up and ready, we are not to sit still, but to appear abroad; let us walk. Christianity teaches us how to walk so as to please God, who ever sees us. Walk honestly as in the day; avoiding the works of darkness. Where there are riot and drunkenness, there usually are chambering and wantonness, and strife and envy. Solomon puts these all together, Psalm 78:18.

53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

Other Translations of 1 Corinthians 15:53

New International Version

53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.

English Standard Version

53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.

The Message

53 In the resurrection scheme of things, this has to happen: everything perishable taken off the shelves and replaced by the imperishable, this mortal replaced by the immortal.

New King James Version

53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

New Living Translation

53 For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies.

Matthew Henry's Commentary on 1 Corinthians 15:53

Commentary on 1 Corinthians 15:51-58

(Read 1 Corinthians 15:51-58)

All the saints should not die, but all would be changed. In the gospel, many truths, before hidden in mystery, are made known. Death never shall appear in the regions to which our Lord will bear his risen saints. Therefore let us seek the full assurance of faith and hope, that in the midst of pain, and in the prospect of death, we may think calmly on the horrors of the tomb; assured that our bodies will there sleep, and in the mean time our souls will be present with the Redeemer. Sin gives death all its hurtful power. The sting of death is sin; but Christ, by dying, has taken out this sting; he has made atonement for sin, he has obtained remission of it. The strength of sin is the law. None can answer its demands, endure its curse, or do away his own transgressions. Hence terror and anguish. And hence death is terrible to the unbelieving and the impenitent. Death may seize a believer, but it cannot hold him in its power. How many springs of joy to the saints, and of thanksgiving to God, are opened by the death and resurrection, the sufferings and conquests of the Redeemer! In verse 58, we have an exhortation, that believers should be stedfast, firm in the faith of that gospel which the apostle preached, and they received. Also, to be unmovable in their hope and expectation of this great privilege, of being raised incorruptible and immortal. And to abound in the work of the Lord, always doing the Lord's service, and obeying the Lord's commands. May Christ give us faith, and increase our faith, that we may not only be safe, but joyful and triumphant.

27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Other Translations of Galatians 3:27

New International Version

27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

English Standard Version

27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

The Message

27 Your baptism in Christ was not just washing you up for a fresh start. It also involved dressing you in an adult faith wardrobe - Christ's life, the fulfillment of God's original promise.

New King James Version

27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

New Living Translation

27 And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes.

Matthew Henry's Commentary on Galatians 3:27

Commentary on Galatians 3:26-29

(Read Galatians 3:26-29)

Real Christians enjoy great privileges under the gospel; and are no longer accounted servants, but sons; not now kept at such a distance, and under such restraints as the Jews were. Having accepted Christ Jesus as their Lord and Saviour, and relying on him alone for justification and salvation, they become the sons of God. But no outward forms or profession can secure these blessings; for if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. In baptism we put on Christ; therein we profess to be his disciples. Being baptized into Christ, we are baptized into his death, that as he died and rose again, so we should die unto sin, and walk in newness and holiness of life. The putting on of Christ according to the gospel, consists not in outward imitation, but in a new birth, an entire change. He who makes believers to be heirs, will provide for them. Therefore our care must be to do the duties that belong to us, and all other cares we must cast upon God. And our special care must be for heaven; the things of this life are but trifles. The city of God in heaven, is the portion or child's part. Seek to be sure of that above all things.

9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

Other Translations of Colossians 3:9

9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices

English Standard Version

9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old selfGreek man; also as supplied in verse 10 with its practices

The Message

9 Don't lie to one another. You're done with that old life. It's like a filthy set of ill-fitting clothes you've stripped off and put in the fire.

New King James Version

9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,

New Living Translation

9 Don't lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds.

It is our duty to mortify our members which incline to the things of the world. Mortify them, kill them, suppress them, as weeds or vermin which spread and destroy all about them. Continual opposition must be made to all corrupt workings, and no provision made for carnal indulgences. Occasions of sin must be avoided: the lusts of the flesh, and the love of the world; and covetousness, which is idolatry; love of present good, and of outward enjoyments. It is necessary to mortify sins, because if we do not kill them, they will kill us. The gospel changes the higher as well as the lower powers of the soul, and supports the rule of right reason and conscience, over appetite and passion. There is now no difference from country, or conditions and circumstances of life. It is the duty of every one to be holy, because Christ is a Christian's All, his only Lord and Saviour, and all his hope and happiness.

10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Other Translations of Colossians 3:10

New International Version

10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

English Standard Version

10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.

The Message

10 Now you're dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it. All the old fashions are now obsolete.

New King James Version

10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him,

New Living Translation

10 Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.
