Illustration: Honesty

J. Michael Shannon

Professor of preaching at Cincinnati Bible Seminary, Cincinnati, Ohio.
According to recent news reports, in Greensboro, N.C., an 11-year-old boy discovered a purse with $2,000 inside. The boy suspected it was stolen and turned it in to police. The boy, Edward Myers, was helping plant trees in a park when he found the purse. By the way, Edward is a Boy Scout.

The owner came to identify the purse, telling a story of a robber who missed the bulk of the money and cast the purse aside. The owner gave Edward a $100 reward. He gave $40 of it to his mother and spent the rest on a sport jersey he wanted.

I think we all would want to commend Edward for learning the lesson of honesty and such a young age. He could be an example to people much older. We also can hope for a day when honesty does not surprise people.
