What does the Bible say about speaking in tongues? Is this a gift I should be seeking?

Ron Rhodes

President of Reasoning from the Scriptures Ministries

The Holy Spirit is the one who bestows spiritual gifts on believers (1 Corinthians 12:11). Not every Christian has every gift. So I think Christians should be happy with whatever gift the Holy Spirit has sovereignly decided to give them.

There are a number of facts about speaking in tongues that we can derive from Scripture:

1. Speaking in tongues is not the definitive evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Not all the Corinthians spoke in tongues (1 Corinthians 14:5), but they had all been baptized (12:13).

2. The fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22,23) does not include speaking in tongues. Therefore, Christlikeness does not require speaking in tongues.

3. Most of the New Testament writers are silent on tongues. Only three books (Acts, 1 Corinthians, and Mark) mention it. (Note: Mark 16:17 is not in the two best Greek manuscripts.) Significantly, many of the other New Testament books speak a great deal about the Holy Spirit, but fail to even mention speaking in tongues.

4. There are more important gifts than tongues, and these are to be sought (1 Corinthians 12:28,31).

Personally, I think much too big a deal is often made about speaking in tongues.

I am very disappointed with the article. I think that it lacks biblical evidence for support and is completely bias toward the issue. I have studied the topic of speaking in tongues and am convinced not by my own ideology but by the Scriptures that the 'gift' of tongues and 'speaking' in tongues are different. I do not have all the Scripture verses here with me, but the book of Acts is fundamental to the foundations of a Believer. Therefore, from Acts 1-17 we see evidence of believers having been baptized in the Holy Spirit and consequently speaking in tongues and magnifying God. Thus, fulfilling Christ's promise of the Holy Spirit's baptism and Joel's prophecy of God's Spirit being poured out on all flesh. The word 'pour out' is not a gentle sort of giving, but a sudden overwhelming pouring out of the Spirit. Basically in a nutshell, speaking in tongues is not required for salvation, but is a promise to individual believers. The gift of tongues is given by the Spirit at His will.

I think the spirit is essential in having a relationship with God. He is just as important as God or Christ, he is the 3rd in the trinity.
Toungues doesnt define you being in the lord so I agree. The spirit lets us know thing without you having to speak in toungues but it is a beautiful thing. I will never forget the first time it happened to me. but it does indeed meke you closer
